Women on the Rise! Interview Series - Urcilina Grammont

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your career/business.

Hello my name is Urcilina Grammont, Lina for short. I'm an offsite full service caterer & a food truck owner.

What is it called and what services/products do you offer?

My company is called Caribbean Pearl and I offer a fusion of Caribbean and American cuisine.

Can you share with our readers how you chose this career/business?

I love to cook and make people happy with my food. I also enjoy coming up with new ways to fuse my Haitian heritage with American cuisine so it was only natural that I opened a restaurant and started a catering company.

If you own your own business, what did you do before and how did you make the transition?

Before I started my company I did a lot of research on restaurant and catering companies. I learned that it was imperative that I put my business together, keep my cost as low as possible and deliver high quality food.

What is your definition of success and what has been your greatest success?

My definition of success is having happy and satisfied customers who will return to me for services because they were very happy the 1st time around.

What are some of the mistakes you have made with your career/business? What have you learned from these experiences? Share any advice you have with our readers.

I failed to plan enough before certain events and was left to do things at the last minute. That is the worst mistake one can make with an event. Planning is essential and every minute counts.

How has networking helped you in your career/business?

My network has referred many clients to me and has provided me valuable advice that has really set me in the right direction.

Do you have any business start-up advice for our readers that are starting/thinking of starting a business or entering in your field?

I suggest doing a lot of research prior to taking the dive. Know your market and how you plan on targeting your clientele. Have your mission in place and set goals for yourself.

How do you achieve work life balance?

I haven’t fully figured that out yet, when I’m busy I’m all business.

What’s next for you? My next project will be to open restaurant/catering hall.

Please share a fun fact about yourself?

I didn’t start cooking till I was 19 years old; I actually started to learn at that time.
